अमर शहीद बाबू हित अभिलाषी जी 16 साल की उम्र में ही राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के संपर्क में आए और 1945 में अधिकारी प्रशिक्षण शिविर (ओटीसी) खंडवा, मध्य प्रदेश में एक महीने का प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त किया और अंततः उस समय के सबसे युवा संघ चालक बन गए। फिर स्नातक की पढ़ाई के बाद वह लोगों की सेवा करने के लिए पंजाब के मोगा से बठिंडा जिले के बुढलाडा चले गए। जल्द ही वह पूरे मालवा क्षेत्र और पेप्सू रियासत के लोगों के लिए 'बाबूजी' बन गए। वह लगातार 14 वर्षों तक बुढलाडा नगर पालिका के सबसे लोकप्रिय अध्यक्ष रहे। उनके कार्यकाल में बुढलाडा नगरपालिका को निवासियों की सेवा में पूरे पंजाब में सर्वश्रेष्ठ माना जाता था। 1966 में उन्हें पंजाब में जनसंघ कैडर के निर्माण और संयोजन की जिम्मेदारी सौंपी गई। उन्होंने कई बार प्रदेश का दौरा किया और पार्टी कैडर के साथ घनिष्ठ संबंध स्थापित किए। राज्य इकाई के अध्यक्ष पद पर पदोन्नत होने से पहले कई वर्षों तक राज्य इकाई के महासचिव रहते हुए पूरी क्षमता के साथ उन्होंने जनसंघ के वर्तमान भाजपा में तब्दील होने तक सेवा की।
वे 1967 में पहली बार पंजाब विधान परिषद के लिए चुने गए और उन्होंने सदन की कई समितियों और उप-समितियों में कार्य किया। इस दौरान पार्टी ने उन्हें दो अखबार प्रदीप और जनप्रदीप की देखरेख का प्रभार भी दिया। 1975 में भारत की तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री श्रीमती इंदिरा गांधी ने देश में आपातकाल थोप दिया और बड़ी संख्या में विपक्षी राजनीतिक नेताओं को जेल में डाल दिया। उन दिनों लोकतंत्र के सेनानी बाबूजी को भी मीसा के तहत कैद कर लिया गया था। वह 19 महीने तक पंजाब की विभिन्न जेलों में सलाखों के पीछे रहे। आपातकाल के बाद वह 1977 में पंजाब विधानसभा में बठिंडा निर्वाचन क्षेत्र का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हुए एमएलए के रूप में चुने गए और कैबिनेट में भी शामिल हुए।
1988 में उन्हें पंजाब भारतीय जनता पार्टी के अध्यक्ष की जिम्मेदारी दी गई थी। उस समय कांग्रेस की स्वार्थी और नासमझ नीतियों ने पंजाब को आतंकवाद के काले युग में धकेल दिया था। लोगों को एकजुट रखना और हिंदू-सिख एकता बनाए रखना आवश्यक हो गया था। हित अभिलाषी जी आगे आए और शांति सुनिश्चित करने के लिए लगातार प्रदेश की यात्रा की। वह लगातार खतरे में थे, लेकिन उन्होंने देश और प्रदेश में आतंकवाद और बेगुनाहों की हत्या के खिलाफ निडर होकर बात की। परिणामस्वरूप अलगाववादियों और पाकिस्तानी एजेंटों ने उन्हें अपने रास्ते में सबसे बड़ी बाधा के रूप में देखा और उन्हें खत्म करने का फैसला किया। 19 सितंबर 1988 को पूर्वाह्न लगभग 11 बजे जब वे चंडीगढ़ के सेक्टर 11 में अपने पार्टी कार्यालय से पंजाब राजभवन जा रहे थे, पहले से ही घात लगाए आतंकवादियों ने उनकी हत्या कर दी।
राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के स्वयं सेवक की शिक्षा को शिरोधार्य करते हुए उन्होंने अंतिम सांस तक लोगों की सेवा करते हुए अपना जीवन तक लगा दिया। एक महान राजनेता होने के अलावा बाबूजी एक प्रख्यात शिक्षाविद्, एक प्रतिष्ठित समाज सुधारक और सबसे बढ़कर एक बेहतरीन इंसान थे। शिक्षा उनका पसंदीदा क्षेत्र था, वे सर्वहितकारी एजुकेशन सोसाइटी के संस्थापक सदस्य, देव समाज कॉलेज फॉर विमेन, चंडीगढ़ के संस्थापक अध्यक्ष, नेहरू मेमोरियल कॉलेज, मानसा के संस्थापक अध्यक्ष और गुरु गोबिंद सिंह फाउंडेशन के संस्थापक सदस्य थे। पंजाबी विश्वविद्यालय और गुरु नानक देव विश्वविद्यालय व पंजाब कृषि विश्वविद्यालय के निर्माण में भी उनका योगदान था। शिक्षा उनका जुनून था और इसके लिए उन्होंने अपना हर पल बिताया।
बाबूजी एक महान राजनेता, एक प्रख्यात शिक्षाविद्, एक प्रतिष्ठित सुधारक और सबसे बढ़कर उत्कृष्ट मानव थे। भारत माता को ऐसे सच्चे सपूतों की जरूरत है, जो बिना झुके राष्ट्र के लिए प्राण भी न्योछावर करने को तैयार रहें।

Amar Shaheed Babu Hit Abhilash Ji came in contact with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at the age of 16 years, and in 1945 received one month’s training at the Officers Training Camp (O.T.C), Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, eventually becoming the youngest Sangh Chalak of that time. Later, post his graduation, he shifted from Moga to Budhlada in Bathinda district of Punjab to serve the people. Very soon, he became ‘BABUJI’ to the people of whole Malwa region and princely states of PEPSU.
He remained the most popular President of Budhlada Municipality for 14 years continuously. During his tenure, Budhlada municipality was regarded as the best throughout Punjab in serving the residents. In 1966, he was assigned the responsibility of organizing and creating Jan Sangh cadre in Punjab.
He toured the state multiple times and established a close relationship with party cadre, while serving the party in various capacities including being the state unit’s General Secretary for many years before being elevated to the post of state unit President which he served till Jan Sangh transformed into present BJP. He was elected to Punjab Vidhan Parishad in 1967 for the first time and served on many committees and sub-committees of the house. During this period, the party also gave him charge of looking after two newspapers Pradeep and Janpradeep.
In 1975 Smt. Indira Gandhi, then India’s Prime Minister, imposed emergency in the country, and imprisoned a large number of opposition political leaders. In those days, Babuji, a fighter for democracy, was also imprisoned under MISA. He remained behind the bars for 19 months in various jails of Punjab. Post emergency, he was elected to Punjab Vidhan Sabha as M.L.A in 1977 representing the Bathinda constituency, even joining the Cabinet. In 1988, he was given the responsibility to steer the Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party as its President. At that time, the selfish and mindless policies of Congress had pushed Punjab into the dark era of terrorism. It became essential to keep the people together and to maintain Hindu-Sikh unity. Hit Abhilashi ji came forward and travelled the state continuously to ensure peace. He was continuously under threat but he spoke fearlessly against terrorism and killing of the innocent in the state and country. As a result, he was seen as the biggest obstacle in the ways of separatists and Pakistani agents who decided to eliminate him.
On 19th September, 1988 at around 11.00 a.m as he was driving down to Punjab Raj Bhawan from his party office in Sector 11, Chandigarh to get a job done for one of the party workers he was ambushed by the terrorists and assassinated.
True to training as Swayam Sevak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh he laid down his life serving the people till his last breath. Besides being a great statesman and political leader Babuji was an eminent educationist, a distinguished social reformer and above all a humanitarian par excellence. Education was his field of interest, he was founder member of Sarvhitkari Education Society, founder Chairman of Dev Samaj College for Women, Chandigarh, founder Chairman of Nehru Memorial College, Mansa and founder member of Guru Gobind Singh Foundation.
He was involved with the creation of Punjabi University and also the Guru Nanak Dev University and Punjab Agriculture University. Education was his passion, and he spent every moment he could spare towards it. Mother India needs such worthy sons, who will give up their lives, but not the cause.
